Watching both the health care and climate/energy debates in Congress, it is hard not to draw the following conclusion: There is only one thing worse than one-party autocracy, and that is one-party democracy, which is what we have in America today. One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened [...] While it isn’t exactly the Walter Cronkite Moment1 much is being made of the fact that today’s NY Times Op-Ed page was wall-to-wall criticism of the President, his administration and their domestic and foreign policies. Ouch. Frank Rich referred to a potential “Katrina Moment”. Tom Friedman accused the administration of abandoning the citizenry while it played politics. [...] Anyone hoping for the promised bi-partisan spirit of the new regime had better not be reading today’s NY Times Op-Ed page. In separate columns both Thomas Friedman and Gail Collins call for Bush to resign and Obama to take over two months early. Seriously. Aside from the small matter of the Constitution there is the unseemly haste [...] |
