…Senate Democratic leaders have decided to remove from a war spending bill the $80 million that President Obama had requested to close the detention center for terrorist suspects at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The House did the same thing last week. Because, you know, it is illegal and immoral to keep them there, but we aren’t going to [...] Obama goes back on yet another campaign promise and decides to resume military tribunals of the Guantanamo detainees. I guess that, as an attorney and law professor, it finally occurred to him that none of the detainees were arrested and imprisoned according to the US criminal code — you know, habeas corpus, Miranda rights, etc. — [...] The Obama administration is moving toward reviving the military commission system for prosecuting Guantánamo detainees, which was a target of critics during the Bush administration, including Mr. Obama himself. …during the presidential campaign Mr. Obama criticized the commissions, saying that “by any measure our system of trying detainees has been an enormous failure,” and declaring that [...] The Obama administration is abandoning one of President George W. Bush’s key phrases in the war on terrorism: enemy combatant In court filings Friday, the Justice Department said it will no longer use the term to justify holding prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Obama still asserts the military’s authority to hold prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.
Let’s hope (™ Obama Inc) that someone is going to be keeping track of all those prisoners at Guantanamo and where they end up after they are released. According to reports, 94 are going to be accepted back by the Yemani government who swears they won’t be allowed to return to terrorism. Oh, wait, one already [...] |
