As Republicans pressed their attempt to remove him from his perch as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Democrats stood by [Rep. Charlie] Rangel — who is under investigation for a series of alleged violations that include improperly occupying several rent-controlled New York City apartments and not disclosing a laundry list of income [...] In the Senate John Ensign (R-NV) was caught schtupping the wife of a campaign aide. The aide resigned, but Ensign ended up compounding the damage by doing a little influence peddling on behalf of the cuckolded husband. That violated the lobbying laws. Senate Majority Leader Reid (also from Nevada) has promised a full and complete [...] In this time of crisis why should political capital be any safer than financial capital? President Obama’s apparent inability to block executive bonuses at insurance giant AIG has dealt a sharp blow to his young administration and is threatening to derail both public and congressional support for his ambitious political agenda. “Apparent inability”? And this after less than a month in charge of the government.
