Today is May 1st, “May Day”, the traditional day of celebration for Communists the world over. And, yes, there still are some left on The Left, undeterred by almost a century of war, genocide, famine, gulags, economic catastrophes and bad business suits.
So, the folks in Cuba were expecting to see their “Maximum Leader”, Fidel Castro today at the big parade in Havana, fully recovered from intestinal problems. After all, they were promised just that by Castro’s comrade-in-arms, Hugo Chavez of the nascent People’s Republic of Venezuela.
But Fidel was a no-show, leading to speculation that his medical problems weren’t concluded as expected. Brother Raul took his place on the reviewing stand.
Chavez, meanwhile, now that he is President For Life, has concluded the nationalization of most of the economy, including the oil industry. This will probably mean the end of any foreign investment in Venezuela, at least from the West. Russia is in no shape to be anybody’s sugar daddy, which leaves China. They certainly need the oil and, since they are being well-paid to service our war debt for us, they can afford it. Don’t be surprised to see the ChiComs setting up shop in South America any day now.
